The Medical Records Department (MRD) of any hospital is its repository of information for patient care, planning of health care services and research. It is the hospital backbone and its “wealth”. Without records, no epidemiological information, on which public health policies and government health expenditure is based, is possible. Medical records refer to records either in paper or electronic form of the results of medical tests, diagnoses and treatments for individuals. These records are confidential and only authorized personnel can have access to them. The RML Hospital maintains records of indoor treatment for ten years. At present between 5.5 to 6 lakh records are stored in paper form.

Efforts to digitalize and computerize the entire MRD system have been initiated.
