Neurosurgery at the Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital can trace its roots to Dr. L.R. Pathak, who inspite of being general surgeon, used to perform neurosurgical operations in seventies with Dr. C.M. Bhan and Dr. S. P. Aggarwal. He inspired Dr. S.P. Aggarwal to take neurosurgery as his future carrier.
Dr. S.P. Aggarwal joined as first neurosurgeon in 1983 after completing in-service M.Ch from AIIMS and created separate department of neurosurgery with the sanction of 3 more specialist neurosurgeons, five senior residents, 5 junior residents, four medical officers and an exclusive O.T. Dr. S. P. Aggarwal became Medical Superintendent in 1992 and later joined as Director General of Health Services to Government of India in 1996.
Dr. L.N. Gupta, M.Ch. from King George’s medical college(KGMC), Lucknow joined the department in 1986 as senior resident and later became specialist neurosurgeon in 1990 and consultant in 2008. He aquired Postgraduate Diploma in Disaster Preparedness & Rehabilitation from GGSIP University in 2010. At present he is Professor of Neurosurgery and Head of Department. He has vast experience in the management of Neurotrauma, Brain and Spinal diseases.
The present Neurosurgery department is well equipped with operating microscope with archiving system, CUSA, neuroendoscope, two stereotactic system, MER, Nerve stimulator, transcranial doppler, image intensifier, transphenoidal, cerebrovascular, cranial and spinal surgery sets etc. The department is taking three candidates for M. Ch.(Neurosurgery) course every year since 2010, affiliated with GGSIP University, New Delhi.
A new trauma centre is catering to the needs of all trauma patients under one roof. The hospital provides round the clock facility for neurotrauma cases and has two hyperbaric chambers for follow up treatment.
On an average 1000 neurosurgical operations are performed every year which includes all types of brain & spinal tumors, trauma, pediatrics neurosurgery, vascular surgery, minimal invasive neurosurgery. The department also organizes workshops with live surgery demonstrations and conferences.
